Double speak!

It is common among weak and dubious characters. Whenever such characters need an escape route, they tend to the other meaning swiftly. Could be just for their petty gains, immoral character, lack of confidence on themselves, mala fide intentions.....

In politics, it is an art cultivated and nurtured by all that one should not give a straight forward answer. A promise is never to be made; if at all made, it is not done in simple and direct manner; however made, it is never intended to be kept. Even if it is purported to be kept, it is done in such a manner that it loses its relevance. The reasons for non keeping of the promise are often not stated or admitted. They are obfuscated. Politics is a great art in dissembling.

In friends' circle, such things can go along. But it shows dubious character otherwise. I feel the intention of such a guy is simply to keep others guessing and move alone. Such fellows are likely to harm in due course of time.
