It dates back to earlier Christianity.

When a ladder was against a building, it formed a triangle. In Christian symbolism, the triangle represents the Holy Trinity (Father-Son-Holy Ghost).

To walk through it was to DEFY THE HOLY TRINITY.

Let's see...walking under a ladder could bump the ladder and cause whatever is on that ladder at that time to fall. The fallen ladder could hit someone or something and cause damage. The fallen ladder could mean that someone is trapped on top of a roof. You could hurt yourself by squeezing around the ladder.

Other than that, I can't see that it's bad luck.

No idea...all I know is I have walked under hundreds of ladders and my luck has not been any worse or better for it. You cannot allow old wives tales to run your life otherwise you really will have bad luck, because you will always be thinking about ti and worrying about. How miserable would that be.

Because something might fall off the ladder and hit you on the head.
