Daily washing it with soap after each use and letting it dry is fine for a while.
To clean it more thoroughly, place the sponge in the dishwasher, inserting it in the tray that holds forks and spoons or place it in a microwave and heat it on high for two minutes. Either the dishwasher or the microwave procedure, which exposes the sponge to higher temperatures, should effectively disinfect and remove bacterial growth. Keeping sponges for 1 month or a little longer before throwing them away is a good rule for keeping sponges sanitary and well maintained.

Put the sponge into one of those zippered nets that are used for protecting hosiery of all kinds and even thin underwear. Then place it into the washing machine. This way it will stay intact and become appropriately cleaned. Make it a complete wash and add enough clothing to make it a full load. I would wash light colored clothing and, with a half cup of bleach, this should do the trick. Otherwise, if the sponge is cheap enough, I would just throw it away and purchase several more of them. Remember this, "If God be for us, who can be against us?" - Romans 8:31. Peace and God Bless.

once a sponge dries it kills whatever is in there. Wet sponges have a ton of bacteria. Once in a while I will throw it in the dishwasher but really for the price buy a new one every month.

zap it in the microwave for 3 minutes
however, if you wash dishes with an antibacterial soap, your sponge should always be fine

Place it on a saucer in the microwave for 1 minute. BE SURE YOU WATCH IT! If it drys out too much it could catch fire. The germs will be steamed away!
