That depends upon what is being plated. It's usually an aqueous solution of some soluble metal salt, such as (say) copper sulfate, which would be used to plate copper.

Some processes involving the plating of silver or gold may use a cyanide compound.

Overall, it's highly variable, and depends upon what you're plating onto what.

I believe when plating steel it is commonly placed in a nickel bath because it is more economically viable, try being more specific because it depends highley on the metal being plated, why it's being plated, and what finish you want.
