Most bench coaches are there for the manager to throw ideas off of. He is kind of versed in all areas of the game, and the manager usually trusts in him the most.

He helps the manager keep track of who they have on the bench to use & what situations they would be best at...he also helps the manager figure out what pitchers work best in what situations. He sits next to the manager, and usually discusses strategies as the game goes on...so they are prepared for what may lie ahead.
