I am thinking about getting an exterminator to kill the mice in my house however most seem to want to use poison. If they die in the walls, how long do they normally smell?

They stop smelling once they are dead, they cannot inhale.

But seriously they stick it up something fierce for about 3-5 days depending on the heat, we had a few dead at the shop and let me tell you, they made our stomach turn with the smell.

The humorous answer, of course, is:

After it's dead, a mouse can't smell anything.

But you knew that.

To answer your question seriously, give it a week or so -- unless it's a REALLY BIG mouse. Then it might take longer.

Why not just get some traps. That way you get them out of the house. Bait them but don't set them for a couple of days. When the bait starts disappearing, then set the traps. After catching some, wait 4 or 5 days and repeat. That way they don't associate the trap with death. Don't save the traps, they are contaminated. Throw the trap away with the mouse. They are cheap so get plenty of them.
Always set the traps against a wall, as that is where the mice/rats run.

Yuck, I don't know but my mom raves about the "live trap" she caught over 25 mice in it this year! She loves it because she hates killing animals and same as you.... she had a little corpse rotting in the crawl space and it took weeks to find it. I would try a live trap first.... also keep in mind that you can't use poison if you have other pets or children. I would only use poison as a last resort!

It depends on the enviornment. Is the temperature hot and moists ?

Usually, it can be within a day it begins to smell. 2 to 3 days you will smell it from a distance.

Oh no! Don't get them to use poison. My parents had rats in their liquor store and one died somewhere above the ceiling tiles. It stunk for 2 weeks. We eventually had to remove all of the ceiling to find it.

most exterminators remove the mouse if in the walls because they may grow mold spores into the wall from the decomposed bodies and are harmfull to people with lowered imune systems
