in the street, whipping a horse, dragging a dog, kicking a cat that kind of thing, would you step in and do something to stop it, even if that person was bigger than you?

I'm too small for my own good - but I can't help it - the red mist decends when I see animals being treated cruelly, it;'s good to see that I'm not alone.
Thanks to everyone for you honest and heartfelt answers - but there's no 'right' answer so I'll put it to the vote

Yes I would because about 3 years ago we had just came back from shopping and this dog was sitting on my porch...wet , hungry, bleeding from a gunshot wound and pregnant. I took her to the vet after I gained her trust ....that took a while. To make a long story short....I have had this dog now for 3 years and she is the best dog I have ever had....very loyal. I ran into a store one day and this guy was looking in my car window and my dog was going crazy....I asked him what he wanted and he said that it was his dog ...I told him "not anymore she wasnt". I told him that if he didnt get away from my car that I would report him to the police for animal cruelty. He admitted shooting her because she refused to listen to him. At that point I did call the police and he was arrested on animal cruelty charges. My dog is a pug-chi and she is my best friend.

I might step in depends as you might get hurt yourself by this person but not with violence that would be hypocritical, if you witness this again get some evidence ie a camera or camcorder that way the person wont have a chance then report to local offices i saw a couple of boys burning something on the grass told them to put it out they didnt I went over then by my shock seen a burning rabbit i went mad not much i could have done they are sick ppl in this world Good luck

I like to think of myself as a peaceful man, of sanguine disposition. I can honestly say that I have only really lost it and given in to physical rage on two occasions. Once when someone hit my little sister, and once when I saw a group of guys digging out baby rabbits and tossing them to dogs.
The thing is, I am by no means a strong animal rights person. I accept the validity of medical research on animals, I've eaten rabbit stew myself! But it was the sheer, wanton, pointless cruelty that flipped me. This wasn't sport, they weren't hunting the rabbits, they weren't using their skill with gun or bow, they simply found the sight of the helpless kittens being ripped apart amusing.
I went berserk. I charged at them, roaring and using language that still makes me blush. I don't know what I'd have done if I'd caught them, they took one look at this madman rushing towards them and legged it!

I would speak to the person first, but if that did not work, I would certainly try to protect the animal, and then report the person to the authorities of that area. No animal deserves to be treated badly.

. . . With the horse, dog and cat - definitely step in and also report it to the RSPCA.

But with "that kind of thing" I'd simply report it to the RSPCW (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Women) . . .

josh r is right horse racing surely is a case for cruelty the way they use that whip on the horses it must really sting, so what is the difference whipping an horse in the street or in a race.

I would but I would also let the proper authorities know. In some cities such as NYC there is a law enforcement group dedicated to protecting animals from such people. There usually is number you can call to let them know exactly what happened.

Well, it depends how dangerous the person is. If they're really dangerous I'd call the cops and not mess with them.If they aren't then I'd try to stop them myself.
