I would like to get engaged now and be married in a year. I have 2 years left of school. The plan has been to wait until I'm done. But I would get more financial aid if I was married so that is a good thing. We have been living together for the past 9 months and have been dating for 2 years. We know we are going to get married, but my family won't accept it until I finish my schooling. I don't understand why. We love eachother very much and would love to start our lives together soon. I don't want to wait for 2+ years.

If I marry him I'm going to continue with school, no doubt about it. I don't see how it would interfere with my going to school at all. Its not like I'm going to start having kids yet either. I just want to get married...what changes so dramatically that I can't go to school AND be married??

One very significant advantage, though it's not visible to you at this point in time, is that life (and marriage) don't always turn out as we hope they will. Sometimes you live happily ever after and sometimes - in the thousands - don't. Or maybe you husband may suffer an injury or disability or other financial demands come up that you never dreamed would.....and for you to finish your education it places you in an overall better position for better jobs and better paying jobs...brighter career opportunities. None of these may sound important now. They may be critical later. And going back to school after you've started a family is tough to do.

How would you get more financial aid? That is what I THOUGHT TOO... but that is not true. Before I was married the government went by just my income or my parents and I had almost all of my school paid for, however once I got married they go by my husband's and I combined income and now I get NOTHING. You will get less money for school by getting married! Trust me..wait..I love my husband, but if I could go back I would have waited til I graduated and then got married. Everything is more expensive after you get married. Instead of one income there is now two.

May I ask why your family has to accept it? If you want to get engaged, do so. If your worry is that your family will not help pay for the wedding if you don't do as they say, I would suggest putting away some money yourself for your wedding.

It is YOUR life and your future together. You may have to put your foot down with your family if it's important with you.

I did and I don't regret it one bit!

your parents want you to wait because they don't have the emotional attachment to the situation that you do and they can see that you need to cover your a** and get school done before hanging all your hopes/dreams on a guy.

if you want your family's blessing, you should wait

if you want financial aid, go ahead
