Hercules...he transcends culture and has lasted for millenia. He was popular on 3 continents in his beginnings, and is now widely recognized and is popular on all 6 populated continents.

He was a prime influence on Superman (according to his creator Jerry Siegel) as well as others including Capt Marvel. He appears as himself in both DC and Marvel comics; and "Hercules: the "Legendary Journeys" was a vehicle for Kevin Sorbo to become a 1990's icon.

No one touches Hercules, nor have they in 2400 years.

Tarzan is worth considering, he's widely recognized.

In my opinion the best fictional character ever is Dracula.

For that matter the vampire character is really a great character.

The character of Dracula goes back centuries, having plague the Translyvania landscape sucking the blood from the necks of so many innocent victims.

I chose this character, because the entire vampire tale derived from the Count. An enormous amount of films has been made about him or the aspect of the Vampire. Other popular characters has been created because of the Dracula influence. Characters like Blade and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

This character is also a force to be dealt with. He has fought the likes of Frankenstein, The Werewolf and The Mummy.

He possesed his own comicbook offered by Marvel comics and has fought the like of Spider-man and almost every major character at Marvel comics.

A few years ago, DC pitted the Count against Superman. The Counts' powers are derived from magic, so Supes had an a very difficult time dealing with Dracula.

I believe he was last featured in the film Van Helsing. I enjoy the exploits of this character and am so happty he is fictional.

"Best" is kind of subjective. Best known would have to be between Sherlock Holmes and Tarzan, as other people have arleady mentioned. Not only have their stories been around longer than superhero stories, they have been translated into more languages.

For sheer product-recognition, I'd have to say Superman. His logo stands out anywhere, and you don't even have to be able to see him clearly. If Marvel (accidentally) prints a panel where, as hero X and the villain of the week are duking it out, in the sky background there is an indistinct flash of red and blue as some hero flies overhead, everybody will write in to ask "Was that SUPERMAN flying by...?"
