Uses for Vinegar

A quarter cup in a quart of water makes a good window cleaner.
A reader adds: When you use vinegar in your water to wash windows, dry with newspapers. Your windows will sparkle!
Fabric softener and static cling reducer - use as you would liquid fabric softener.

Air freshener, used with baking soda - use 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1 tablespoon vinegar and 2 cups of water. After it stops foaming, mix well, and use in a (recycled) spray bottle into the air.

Chewing gum dissolver - saturate the area with vinegar. If the vinegar is heated, it will work faster.

Stain remover - for stains caused by grass, coffee, tea, fruits and berries. Soak clothing in full strength vinegar.
Use diluted 1:1 in water to take pet odors out of carpets. Find the spot, and saturate it with about 1 1/2 times the original volume. Let set for awhile then blot up. Repeat if your cloth is very dirty after blotting. I make sure to turn on a fan and open a window, especially for large spots!

I put about a tablespoon of vinegar in the water when poaching eggs. It helps the eggs to keep their shape. No taste of vinegar either.
Set a container (shallow bowl) of vinegar throughout the house to absorb unpleasant odors. Works great on burned food odors. Do not use styrofoam. It will soak thru it.

Use vinegar and olive oil with a selection of herbs on your salad. A reader adds: I like to use vinegar the old-fashioned way: I eat it!! I use all sorts of vinegars as salad dressing ingredients (my favorite is the classic red wine vinegar mixed with olive oil). I also eat my fish with malt vinegar, which is also very good on french fries.

I liked the 'spray mister' approach to air freshening, but as a sometimes poor bachelor cook, I have blackened fish when it isn't on the menu. Vinegar in a towel, twirled about the head will quickly stop the smoke detectors from screaming. It also freshens the air, and captures the smoke smell before the whole house is caught.

Put vinegar on white bread around a house to get rid of smoke smell fom a fire.

Grow beautiful azaleas: Occasionally water plants
with a mixture of two tablespoons vinegar to
one quart water. Azaleas love acidic soil.

Kill grass on walks and driveways.
Pour full strength on unwanted grass.

Kill weeds. Spray full strength on growth until
plants have starved.

Increase soil acidity. In hard water areas, add
a cup of vinegar to a gallon of tap water for
watering acid loving plants like rhododendrums,
gardenias, or azaleas. The vinegar will release
iron in the soil for the plants to use.

Freshen cut flowers. Add 2 tablespoons vinegar
and 1 teaspoon sugar for each quart of water.

Prolong the life of flowers in a vase. Add two
tablespoons of vinegar plus three
tablespoons of sugar per quart of warm water.
Stems should be in three to four inches of water.

Neutralize garden lime. Rinse your hands liberally
with vinegar after working with garden lime to
avoid rough and flaking skin
.
Clean pots before repotting, rinse with vinegar to
remove excess lime.

I have a list of uses that was used decades ago but will have to find it first. One I remember is when, as I did, joined the gym and the next day I was sooo stiff and sore, I was told to pour a few tablespoons of vinegar into my bath water which will help for the elasticity of ones muscles. Will send list as soon as I find it.
2. I always use about half to one teaspoon in my cooking when I need to cook my beef or lamb meat to become soft and tender.

The most horrible smell I have ever woken up to is vinegar. Every now and then my mom uses it to clean out the coffee maker. Every time she does it in the morning. Try it out if you want to see what I mean. Or don't. It smells disgusting.

You could play with it. See what happens when you add it to baking soda. I'm gonna do it right now.

Hello,

If you mix a gallon of vinegar with one cup of salt and one tablespoon of dish detergent, you get a very powerful weed killer. You have to be careful and only spray it on what you want to kill because this stuff will knock out everything in it's path, including grass.

I've tried it myself and it really does work and it's much cheaper then buying "Round Up".

For sunburn... seriously, tried and tested. Also, soak metal stuff (pots, pans, draining boards on sinks) with diluted white vinegar and lemon juice.... Works wonders.

Also, a spoon of sugar, add a table spoon of hot water, stir, add about 3 table spoons of malt vinegar, a few drops of sesame oil - voila, great for a dip for spring rolls, wall ip dumplings, any sort of fried Chinese food.

I throw a cupful of white vinegar in my washing machine and dishwasher. Just run it on a quick cycle and it's lovely and clean again.
