Actually your UPS and automoblie both use lead acid batteries. The one in your UPS is just sealed so morons can handle it without getting sulphric acid burns or blowing up the house from venting hydrogen gas. Lead acid batteries have the advantage of being cost effective. While their energy density is low, they are much cheaper to make than an equivalent alkaline or carbon dry cell battery. A power inverter does not use batteries. Electronics equipment often use lithium or nickel metal hydride batteries, because weight and size is a factor (as well as rechargability).
