Like, say I'm on the phone w/ someone and I'm not listening but I pretend I am by saying the occasional "uh-huh", "yeah", "right" and so forth.

I wouldn't necessarily call it unethical, but it is a little rude. We all do it, however, sometimes unintentionally. My husband tests me sometimes when he can see I'm spacing out and not listening. I still respond, but I'm completely not paying attention to a word he's saying. Of course, the details surrounding the conversation can affect how serious of an offense you are committing.

it's not a question of ethics. It's a case of poor manners or etiquette not to pay attention to somebody who's talking to you. Sometimes, though, you deliberately tune out somebody when they keep repeating themselves or refused to let you put in a word edgewise. Or sometimes the other person doesn't want any input just a good listening ear.

i wodln't turn it into a code of ethics.. but since you have.. then it gets a yes and a no... yes because if you don't want to talk to the perons then you shoudl jsut tell them that and get off the phone, on the other hand if what theya re tlakign about really isn't all that important and you ahve tiem to kill then what they don't knwo won't hurt them right... especially if its a friend who needs ot let of steam.. now THAT i do alot...lol

Well, it depends. Are you lying to them? It might be considered a lie and if you are lying, then it is unethical. This is what I'm leaning towards. Ethical or not, it would be rude.
