You can have harmonising colours or contrasting colours. It depends very much whether you are talking clothes, decorating, designing a garden colour scheme, web design or what! There are some basic rules but each field has its own peculiarities and it also depends what you want the colours to do to the mind!
These pages should help you explore the basics of colour combinations:

Two good ways to tell if two colors match are
1 any two colors opposite on the color wheel will always match.
Such as red and green
2 any two colors that appear together in nature such as green and brown or gray.
Hope this helps

Our primary colors have partners that compliment each other.Yellow, orange, and green are in the same family. Pink, red, purple or in another. Blue is a cool color..red is hot. If you stayin the same family of hues..you can partner colors well you never dreamed would work!

Sky blue and pale yellow.
Deep purples and bright yellows
Red and yellow.
Are you getting the idea that I like yellow? Yellow compliments all other colors quite nicely.
Of course two tones of the same color always look good together too. How are you going to use the two colors?

play with the color wheel...colors opposite to eachother are called complementary colors which look best when used together. For example red and green are complementary colors
