I have a laptop that will not connect to the hotel's internet that I am staying in. A note from the hotel says that after I connect the ethernet cable into the laptop (its in the right slot) and press on the internet explorer window an agreement page should come up from the hotel to agree terms and conditions of using the internet via the hotel, but I still get the usual 404 error. A note in the room says my laptop should have a network card which it does and a TCP/IP ???? I have no idea where to go from here. This is a brand new 3 week old HP laptop with XP Pro with SP2 on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Incidentally when Im in the office it connects to the internet via a wireless router, and this works fine.

Try this; Go to internet explorer, tools, internet options, connections, lan settings and ensure that automatically detect proxy settings is selected. All network cards do TCP/IP - or at least all that a usual person would buy, e.g. HP. Also tick the box that says dial a connection if network isn't available.

Relax, chances are theres nothing wrong with your system. Try rebooting your system with the hotels cable plugged in. I am referring to the ethernet cable, looks like a big phone line. This will release your old address info and supply new address info from the hotel. I just reread the question, there was another answer that said this. You will have to do what I said earlier, but make sure that your wire LAN, "network" card is enabled prior to rebooting.

I am sure they are using an DHCP server to give you a dynamic address.

Follow these steps :

1 Click Start
2 My Network Places
3 View Network Places
4 Right Click Local Area Connection
5 Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
6 Obtain IP address automatically
7 Obtain DNS server address automatically
8 Click OK and restart computer

This should work. Please tell me if it doesn't

If you can get to a working puter... go to: www.HP.com and look for the help link. State the problem along with your model no. and thery will reply (email). This is free of charge even out of warranty.
If it is only 3 wks old, you should have a HP help no. listed in the paper work that came with the puter. In warranty this should be free phone help.

You should have a little computer icon right? right click on that and say "open network connections" then you see under LAN or High Speed internet there's another computer icon. right click on that and it gives you choices. You could try repairing it OR disable it and then enable it again. OR try reinstalling IE
