I have worked with people that are hooked on the stuff. Many started out with cocaine and start on crack because someone usually tells them it works faster (which it does) and is more intense (Which it is for a few minutes), and is cheaper than basting cocaine. The people I talked to said they started using it while high and it was a very cheap high. The only thing it doesn't stay cheap. A chemically in most people’s brain is changed so that it is no longer able to function without crack. The person craves the drug almost immediately from the first drag. The drug is very short lived in the brain, so the users finds themselves almost in a constant panic to find more, eventually spending many times more cash than they would on cocaine.
When we would have discussions of approx 20 people in treatment for different things after being "sober" for around 2 weeks, I would bet everyone that I could tell in 10 minutes who is hooked on crack and who isn't. I would then pull out a baggy of rocks that looked exactly like crack and tell everyone to stare at them. Within 5 minutes the people who were hooked on crack would have beet red faces, sweat pouring from their foreheads and the hands would be shaking.
It's nasty stuff. I've seen men and women with great jobs, families, homes and health lose it all.
This is why so many are against smoking pot. The stuff is great, but the choices we make while smoking it leads to other things, like trying cocaine. We as people are intelligent until we alter our brain cells and thinking, like the drunk driver that killed my 6 year old daughter 28 years ago.
I guess there isn't a real clear answer to why. There is an answer to slowing it down ~ Education.

Crack and other addictive drugs chemically alter a part of the brain called the reward system. As mentioned previously, when people smoke crack, the drug traps the chemical dopamine in the spaces between nerve cells. Dopamine creates the feelings of pleasure we get from enjoyable activities such as eating and having sex. But in crack users, dopamine keeps stimulating those cells, creating a "high" -- a euphoric feeling that lasts anywhere from five to 15 minutes. But then the drug begins to wear off, leaving the person feeling let-down and depressed, resulting in a desire to smoke more crack in order to feel good again.

Different people do it for different reasons. Could be that they want to fit in with some of their friends. Peer pressure is the most common reason. The ordinary person wouldn't just wake up one day and say hmmmm, I think I'll go smoke some crack.

It is a very economical substance. Addicts who spend the majority of their "entertainment" money on cocaine or heroin soon learn that they can get more for their money with crack. Unfortunately they do not realize how addcitive it is until they try it. And because the other drugs are not as addictive, they do not realize the power that crack can have over someone.

My advice for anyone thinking of do drugs is to go to victory outreach and meet people who used to do drugs. It ruins your health...one man I know now has diabetes, heart problems and hepatitis. It may be fun to get high but later on it's not fun to be sick all the time.

crack is no different than any other vice. Cigarettes, alcohol, pot, cocaine, heroin, etc. Every one has a vice and for some people that vice could be crack, but it can also be food. (some people shop!)

To get some kind of a high.

Maybe to numb their senses for the time being.
Same as with any other drug or alcohol.

Because once you try it you become physically addicted. People do drugs in general to escape from the pain of life. Ironically they usually end up causing more pain in the end.
