I don't know if people USUALLY forget these, but here are some essentials that might not be the first things to come to mind:
Laundry soap, calling card (if no cell phone), bath towels, extra bedding, notes from high school classes that could be helpful, an organizer or planner of some sort, toothpaste, deodorant, any medicines, info. about parents' health insurance if still on their plan, info. about your car ins. if bringing a car, mini fridge for dorm room is great to have, first-aid type supplies that you usually depended on parents to have--band aids, Ibuprofen, anti-diarrhea medicine, etc.

Two things: Scissors and sharpie marker.

Everyone forgets and has to borrow the scissors - that marker is so that you can claim them as yours by writing your name on them.

Duct Tape! It will fix, or rig up anything. I used it to keep my rug is place and seal our lousy dorm windows to keep in the AC.
