The physician's office called and said my procedure had been approved for an overnight stay at the hospital. Now that surgery has been done, insurance has denied, saying this was never approved. I feel I was misled by the doctor's staff and now I owe a $30,000 bill. What are my options?

Find out from you insurance company what the appeal process is and then ask your doctor to write a letter stating this. Keep in mind that there are organizations that can help you. You may be able to ask the doctor for a discount as well as have him contact the hospital and explain the situation...if he is unwilling to help, get another doctor. Also be sure to always get approval from your insurance FIRST in writing!!!!! The do tor is too busy to follow up with this and insurance companies are constantly changing what they cover these days....the book "Healthcare for Less" help you with this.....I just finished reading it and I have learned soooooo much about saving money in healthcare. You can get the book through www.healthcareforless.us (I think that is a direct link to Amazon.com) or order it like I did from Barnes and Noble!!!! It is the best investment! It even talks about how you might be able to write off some of that bill and get government help!!!!

Sometimes this is a matter of how the doctor's office did the coding for the billing. Check with the doctor's office and the insurance company. Find out why it was not approved and go from there. Be persistent.
