Some of the impassioned pleas for people to be nicer to each other, instead of the meanness that you see rampant on Yahoo Answers, have caused me to think a lot about the way I respond to people myself.

POVERTY IN THE UNITED STATES: A REVOLVING DOOR

A. $18000/year is a hardship that only varies by degree depending on
the cost of living in the person's locale. Here is the population
effected:
-Retireds/Disabled/other fixed incomes rarely exceed 18k/yr
unless otherwise subsidized.

-The Working Poor: single income families, blue collar/lower
white collar workers [minimum wage or just over and employers
would prefer eliminating their positions to increasing their
pay.

-Unemployed: they are just able to work enough to avoid
total calamity, but hardly ever find permanent work before
unemployment benefits expire; maximum unemployment benefit
consistently falls below national poverty level.

-Youth are willing to settle for substandard jobs to meet
required experience to breakinto their given fields.

-Mentally Ill
-Very little support is provided.
-They are unable to function in their jobs.
-They have a propensity for noncompliancy.
-They are often homeless
-They often lack skills/direction to get available
help.

B. Ways people in the $18k/year and below cope:
-Many people board together, ride bikes, rely on food stamps,
and/or go to free or sliding scale health clinics.

-They drive old cars, but the maintanance thereof is financially
crippling....
-because of their transportation challenges, they
often have to live in dangerous [toxic/↑crime rate]
locales.

-[because they can't afford it] they:
a]dont insure
their vehicles,
b]don't use their hot water/electricity
certain parts of the year,
c]they avoid contact with
law enforcement [expired stickers/tags, bald tires,
no insurance, and it's a Catch 22, i.e., if driving
with traffic, it increases their chances to get tickets
yet, if driving slow in traffic, it increases their
chances of being noticed by law enforcement]. If they
get a ticket then the cycle starts==>the fines increase
if the person can't pay on time and eventually they
can lose it all and may indigents don't know their
rights, arrests stick, and violations DON'T get over-
turned.

-U.S. Industry preys on the Indigent
Taxes/Regualtions hit them the hardest
Often they are ineligible for any benefits
↑education is a virtual impossibility lest they recieve
a rare scholarship.

-Possible Resolutions
-Repeal repressive taxes [gas, employment,
cigarettes*,etc.]

-Ban late fees [or curb them significantly]

-Crush unethical practises by Loan Companies/Banks,
Insurance Scams, mortage companies' malpractises,
and check cashing enterprises that gouge the poor
[when they have bad or low credit ratings they can't
get bank accounts which forces them to use high priced
check cashing companies].

-Ban non-catastrophic health insurance claims:
indigents often don't have insurance or they have
substandard insurance which doesn't pay well. Dr.s'
offices have to run up costs to pay insurance clerks
to handle all the petty standard claims when they could
decrease fees.
-Don't cap lawsuits!
Frivolous lawsuits could be dealt with otherwise.
example: fast food restaurant fears lawsuit
hence, throws out still edible food which could
feed the hungry/homeless...same for other
business such as grocers, too.
-Stop illegal immigration/outsourcing
-↑ taxing for the rich and enact laws to prevent
loopholes.
-↓ taxes for the poor and enact laws to enhance
loopholes to help them.
-Ban employment taxes
-Make ticket offenders work off their debt rather
rather than jail them

*quitting is next to impossible when there is financial stress.
