It goes up & down with the opening of 2 levers (one each under the visors) & pushing a button on the center console. I own a '99 JXi convertible, and I strongly urge you to read consumer reviews online about this car before buying, along with reviews on the Chevrolet Cavalier & Pontiac Sunfire convertibles. I wish I had! This has been the most expensive car to maintain & keep running I have ever owned. I have replaced: bearings, tie rod ends, upper control arms, the distributor (not the cap - the whole thing must be replaced - very costly!). The ignition has gone out twice in 6 months. The transmission is starting to slip. Every time something goes wrong, the mechanics say 'This is a common problem with these cars" - I am fed up & can't wait to get rid of it. I wish I would have gotten a Cavalier or Sunfire, but was wanting the more luxurious ride & options the Sebring offers. I have owned many Fords & a few GMs, and they were all great, reliable cars. I maintain my cars obsessively, with oil changes, tune-ups, transmission service & timing chain/belts, etc. taken care of on time, every time. This will be my only Chrysler product. When people ask me about it, I always say "It is the most luxurious, best -riding, well-appointed but unreliable piece of crap I have ever owned!" Consider yourself warned. I wish I would have listened!

I recently rented an '05 and it was automatic. I would assume that the previous years are also.
