Sounds like a tarantula, possible Aphonopelma chalcodes, the desert tarantula. They are quite large, but are harmless, they could give a nasty bite, but it is never clinical, here are several photos of Aphonopelma tarantulas:

If you click on the photos, they will enlarge and give you the name of the three differetn species here.

There are also several spiders that would fit the size description, but the black and hairy is pretty much particular to tarantulas in this part of the world.

I hope this helps!

sounds like a tarantula although to exist in ohio that is one hardy spider, i live in south texas and we used to get them in the house all the time. Otherwise it is probably a wolf spider or some similar hunting spider. They can get pretty big, they usually have a kinda V or W on their back in darker brown. Was the spider in a web or on the ground. It could also have been the trap door spider since that one is larger and very fuzzy. Hope that helps

If it was in ohio then it wasn't a tirantula unless someone let one loose in there to be funny. It sounds like a wolf spider or a wood spider. Jumping spiders don't get that big. Was it eastern ohio or westwern?

the photos are no longer clean adequate to inform, yet while it rather is a brown recluse, on the lower back element of his physique is a suited image of a violin, with the tuning keys in the direction of the pinnacle. I hate spiders too, and discovered from Googling "spider repellant", a thank you to maintain them away. the ordinary pesticides won't kill them via fact of a waxy or oily masking on their bodies that the insecticide can no longer penetrate. yet they do unlike cleansing soap! I mixed some Ajax dish cleansing soap in a gallon of water and poured that throughout the time of and on my mailbox, and have not greater spiders interior the mailbox via the line. additionally observed 4 or 5 wolf spiders getting into the storage one night, and poured that mixture around the front: not greater spiders getting into the storage!. does not take plenty liquid cleansing soap, the two.

Could have been a tarantula, but they like hot dry climates, so probably not.

Probably a jumping spider. But be careful...ones with red hourglass shapes on their backs are black widows...

Jumping spiders bite, but they aren't poisonous.
