I have a 2002 chevy impala. And for some reason the car wont start. Its like its not getting any gas. So I was wondering would the fuel pressure regulator have anything to do with this?

It's possible that it's the fuel pressure regulator. It ensures the the fuel rails have enough pressure, so when the injectors open fuel is sprayed out.

Think of your fuel injectors like the spray nozzle at the end of a water hose. If you turn on the water and you depress the spray gun, water shoots out. If you turn off the water and there is no pressure in the hose, no matter how long you depress the trigger on the spray gun, no water (or only very little water) will come out.

However, just to let you know, please check all other components before going after the fuel pressure regulator. Though they do go out, it is more likely that your fuel pump has died, fuse and relay to the fuel pump, a clogged fuel filter or clogged injectors. Fuel pressure regulator should be one of the latter items to check.

Good Luck

If your problem starts in closed loop, it's not your regulator. That would screw up open or closed loop. Is your fuel trim maxed out lean both long and short term (-25%). If they are and you are still rich, than you have exceded the maximum allowable compensation the E.C.M. is programed to give. You either need to reprogram the computer, (not likely) or try to reduce fuel pressure since you can't reduce your injector duty cycle (ms open time) any further. You should be able to get an adjustable regulator that will be able to get you back in line with what the computer can compensate for. What have you done to decrease the airflow of the engine that severely? If your fuel trims are not maxed out lean, or the oxygen sensor is not totally maxed out at .950 to 1.0 volt, than your O2 may be either bad or misreading because of an upstream exhaust leak. A bad Air flow sensor will usually cause problems open loop as well If it only has a mass air pressure sensor in the intake that will cause problems in open loop too. Did you check your coolant temp sensor. They will default to -56 f. causing extremely rich conditions. Lastly , you say everything has been changed, but wiring problems are just as common as component problems. Replacing parts does not fix wiring/ connector problems.

The regulator controls fuel pressure depending on engine load...or how much you put your foot in it. Check fuel pressure before you look at the regulator.

To check the regulator...with the engine hot and up to operating temp, pull the vacuum hose and see if there's any fuel in the hose. If fuel is present, replace the regulator.

to maintain a constant pressure of fuel to each injecter and no it will not run without it but first make sure your fuel pump is kicking in you will hear a buzzing for a few seconds after you turn key on have someone listen under car where tank is also check for a bad fuse for pump or also a relay switch could be bad

yes it would. check your relays first then check your fuel pump. most likely it's your fuel pump. i have a 2002 cavalier and pump went out at 50000 miles it cost me $300.00 for the pump and i replaced it myself
