There are many touristic places you can enjoy for all levels of sight, emotion and even budgets.

By car from CA you can go all the way to Cabo is a real great trip for 2 days one way. From Texas try Veracruz Boca del Rio... it's good but I prefer Pacifico coast

By plane try Acapulco, Ixtapa, Mazatlan or Puerto Vallarta: landscapes, luxury, standard and economic hotel rates, all the kind of foods for all kind of tastes.

Cancun is all inclusive destiny, Cozumel has the most beautiful color sea of the country

Have a nice day!!

As mentioned, it depends where you live.....

If you are in Texas or the east, Vera Cruz is nice. About 200 miles north of Vera Cruz city, just to the south-east of the oil city of Poza Rica is a beautiful area, and only a day or so from the Texas border. There is a lovely little resort town called "Tecolutla" which has beaches and prices that are from the 70s or 80s. (1/2 of what you would pay in most tourist resorts, about 1/4 of what you pay in Cancun!)

Slightly south of there between Tecolutla and the city of Nautla, you will find the Emerald Coast (Costa Esmeralda) again lots of nice and reasonable hotels, great beaches, great seafood (that's everywhere in Vera Cruz state actually)

Nearby this area is Tajin (one of the most famous pyramid ruins in the country) and Papantla (center of the vanilla industry and home to the world famous "voladores" the pole "fliers" of Mexico - they perform every day!)

All in all if you are driving from the east Texas border, there is absolutely no better place in Mexico to visit by car!

(And if the "scaredy-cats" have you worried about "banditos" simply DON'T travel by night. This coastal road is well-used and well-patrolled by day.)

What are you looking for and where are you starting from ?
There are nice colonial towns in the mountains or laid back beaches on the sea of Cortes or the pacific ocean. Some quiet, some with rockin nightclubs. If you entered through Nogales, there are some great towns on the sea of Cortes easy to drive to.
Don't go alone, be careful of bandits and corrupt police.
Or, try the copper canyon in the mountains to the south east.
You can take a train through the canyon to the beach.

You didn't say where you are starting from so it would be hard to say. If you are on the west coast San Carlos is good. the east cost Veracruz is OK. Yes Cancun is thirteen hundred miles from Texas border, I have driven it many times.

making use of in Mexico isn't comparable to making use of in Canada or the States, you will require a tourist Visa once you enter on the border, it somewhat is barely good for a hundred and eighty days, additionally you will % specific vehicle insurance which could be gained previously crossing the boarder, this isn't any longer secure tocontinual at nighttime via constrained fencing of farm animals, in case you do settle on tocontinual to PV, this is probably around 20 hours making use of time from the Texas Boarder, your vehicle might desire to be in good reliable shape yet i doesn'tcontinual something too flashy. Take my suggestion Fly via commercial airways its lots greater secure and in case you certainly need tocontinual in PV lease a vehicle once you get there.

The Mexican / U.S. Border is 2,000 miles long. If you drove into a border town on the other side as opposed to your side of the border that would not be a trip that you could make without driving far. You need to state where you are.

That is my answer from Washington, D.C.
