takes too long for machine to function. sometimes items freeze. or my window disappears, but mostly very, very slow. sometimes says "not responding"!

Your computer will use the hard drive as "virtual memory" when the ram you have installed is not large enough to handle the job at hand. When it is reported that the virtual memory is low, then you have exceeded the capabilities of the portion of disk set aside to act as virtual ram. If you have the hard disk space available you can set aside a larger portion to be used for virtual memory, but the real solution is to add more system ram so that the much slower hard drive is seldom used for this need.

That happens when you load or activate too many programs than you system memory can handle. Try not to open multiple files from different applications, most particularly the graphics heavy files, unless necessary. Also, check what extra processes are already crammed into the memory that are actually not needed. You may deactivate these processes from the Task Manager (press CTRL-ALT-DELETE to open it).

Make sure do a virus scan and spyware scan. Then do a dskcheck Do a clean disk then if still problem try this. Should work
Right-click "My Computer", "Properties", "Advanced" tab. Under
Performance section, click the "Settings" button, "Advanced" tab,
under the Virtual memory section, click the "Change" button, and
check the option, "System managed size". Click the "Set" button,
click "OK", "Apply", and "OK" your way out.

This means your computers memory is very close to being maxed out. EIther do a house cleaning and remove unnecessary items or add more memory.

leave it to your computer, it iitself adjusts and increases the virtual memory, so you need not be worried, if you get these messages very offen then you have to plan to upgrade your system.
