poe as in edgar allen?

a good way to write introductory paragraphs - at least at first until you are able to be more sophisticated with your writing - is the inverse pyramid. begin with a very broad sentence (in the history of poetry, there have been many poets who have been able to capture the darker side of human life, but none who were equal to E.A.P), then add one or two sentences that work down to the final sentence, which should be your essay's thesis sentence.

unless this is a class in which creative writing gives you more points, in which case you should take the first answer's suggestion.

well, what are u trying to say about poe? introduce who he is. don't make it harder than it really is. u could say that not many authors have contributed to the "dark side" of human faults as Edgar Allen Poe has..something to that extent that introduces that u are speaking of

Poe
Dark Stories
Men's weaknesses

then whittle it down to 3-4 key things u want to speak about and use each point as a paragraph in the body. have good quotes that support each particular point u are trying to "prove" about poe.

good luck!

Agreeing with Maverick, start as Poe would or perhaps use some adjectives describing Poe--dark , brooding, etc.
