I have no problem with it, use it often. I think it may be spelled y'all as a contraction of 'you all." The charming part of this is that you is already plural, so the "all" needn't be added. Extra words added to speech are often colorful, very prominent in the South (South East that is). It is hold overs from the plantation days. I am a Hoosier, and we have our little peculiarities also, such as "store bought," "boughten" , etc. And, we use "Y'all" often. I am called on it with great regularity. Good luck

LOL proper english is not a bad thing. People do judge you on your use of language(sad but true). If you want people to take you seriously and not treat you as if you fell off the back of a turnip truck, I'd not use it(except maybe around family).

Y'all is not a word but slang. The English Language has been slaughtered through the years - sad.
If you translate Y'all to what it really should be it would be "You all are acting badly, etc.
The proper way to say that would be "Everyone is acting badly"
Like I say, sad.

It doesn't bother me.... I'm used to it, now....
Moved to Southwestern Virginia a few years ago,
and I hear it all the time....
What i'm still not used to, however, is everyone calls
"Shopping carts" "buggies" here.
It's sooo strange, the language diff. *lol*

Yes, I know, but as an English teacher, it grates on my nerves. It's ok, southerners yell at me for "oy veh".

I thought it was y'all, a contraction as in "you all".
A Yankee who knows.
