After the initial purchase price for hardware and software everything else is free. It does cost some people a few dollars a year for an antivirus update, but I just wait for CompUSA's annual Thanksgiving sale where the rebate equals the purchase price, so my cost per year is zero.

A lot has to depend on what extras that you buy throughout the year. Some people spend thousands on just updating hardware. I myself find that I spend a couple hundred of dollars a year on hardware and that doesn't include printer supplies and the power to run it all.
