My swivel chair squeaks every time I lean back on it or, as it appears now, even breathe sitting on it!! How can I fix it? Please note I am not even remotely related to anyone at the Home Depot, so please be as explicitly clear in your directions as possible! Thanks in advance for your help!

Yes, use WD-40. Put the chair on some newspapers or somewhere where dripping oil wouldn't harm or stain the floor underneath, then spray generously. Work the moving parts to get the WD-40 worked in well. Wipe off any excess with a cloth or paper towel. Just use plenty at first to let it soak in.

Well, everyone here is advising you to use WD-40... but thats not a good choice for all squeaks... so... I have to ask, where is the squeak at?

If the squeak is between two moving wood pieces... then wax would be better.... a simple crayon will do the trick. You do NOT want to use WD-40 on wood!

If the squeak is a "fixed" wood part..., let's say, like a spindel, or joint in the wood... then you need a product that will actually swell the wood in the joint, thus eliminating the movement. I'll provide a link to this type of product, for this fix.

The ONLY time you want to use WD-40 to fix a squeak, is if it is metal on metal. And even then.... you might want to consider something a little more heavy duty, like a spray on white lithium grease.

Good Luck!

As wooden chairs age they dry out and the joints wear. This allows movement and that's your squeak. periodically soak the joints and they will swell and be squeak free for some months. If it got too bad, you need to drill a hole through the joint in the middle, just slightly smaller than the diameter of a piece of dowel 1/4" or 5/16" (6 or 8 mm) and drive it in then cut the ends flush Job done !!

Unscrew the screw under the chair, take the top of the chair off and spray some WD-40 on it, its probably cause its starting to rust.
