Cellphones need cell towers. IF the ship is near land where it would work, it will work. It wont work in the Ocean. When you are docked in another country buy a phone card, its much cheaper.

We found that they only worked in port and you need to have the international open on your phone contract. Many cell phones only
work in the US, Canada or Mexico.
Satellite phones work anywhere.

I was just on a carnival cruise....Was only able to use in the ports...or close to it not at night when the ship was sailing...but you may have better luck, give it a try. Have a good time!
