I think that it is a crock of crap. It just gives the law dogs another excuse to stop and harass otherwise law abiding citizens.

My personal opinion is that I feel the government (in fact any government no matter where you live) are cracking down on 'smokers', and their habits. PERIOD!
I truly find it unfair where a government can 'tax the hell' out of cigarettes, and then DICTATE how those cigarettes are to be consumed. I paid the damn taxes, I even paid the ridiculous amounts to buy cigarettes. In a first-nations culture - tobacco is a sacred comoddity - and for the government to attempt to control it - is nothing short of appalling and hyppocritical.
Granted we must take steps and precautions when it comes to our children's health, however, in my many years of riding to the beach with my parents, and them smoking in the car on the way, I NEVER LOST ANY LIMBS OR LIFE because of it. My folks even went through the pain-staking task of trying to sheild if from us, but it only made us more curious and more apt to sneak the habit under the bed - (WARNING - this is the main cause to fires breaking out - particularily after midnight)
I truly believe these governments are totally going overboard due to the public outcry - however - these hippocrytes should step out have that smoke they are craving and just chill.

No matter what anyone thinks about such a thing, its been clear for a looooog time that this country has gone over the edge when it comes to legislating our behavior. It's an assault on personal freedom and I'm sick of government acting like a parent instead of what they are: someone I hired to do a job, not to sniff my shirts, peek in my pockets and listen at the bedroom door.
I've been a smoker my whole adult life and I never smoke with my kids in the car. But that's a decision I make myself, thank you.
They keep this crap up and soon we won't be able to drink and drive, either!

It is bad to smoke with kids in the car, but I do not think it is something that needs to be regulated with laws. This should be a common sense issue. I am a smoker, but I would not smoke with children in my car. I don't even smoke when adults who don't smoke are in my car. I think people are smart, we don't need a law for everything.

It'd be one thing if it was a law saying you couldn't smoke in your car by yourself or with other adults, but children can't make the decision not to get in the car with their parents because they're smoking. They're innocent bystanders who are being put at risk of lung cancer because their parents don't care enough about them to smoke somewhere else. So, basically this law is saying that if a parent doesn't care enough about their kids to protect them from the second-hand smoke, the government is going to step in and do their job for them. To me, it's basically the same as a parent getting into trouble for their child not wearing a seatbelt or not being in a carseat. Both things involve putting their child at risk to some degree. Sure, the seatbelt thing could harm them immediately, but it's been proven that second-hand smoke is just as bad as smoking, especially for children.

I think that neither we nor our children are born smokers and it's selfish to make your child breathe in that smoke causing them to possibly become smokers in the future and/or get cancer. I like the law, it's protecting out kids. If you need the smoke that bad, pull over and step outside the car.

I agree with this logic of why they are trying to pass this bill. However I don't agree on the same token because what happens if a person smokes in the privacy of their home? If someone is caught smoking in their homes around the kids, no one is going to get in trouble. Also a vehicle is private property as a house is.

Personally, I don't smoke in the house or car with my kids and don't believe any responsible person should do so, so for me a law that's passed wouldn't make any difference to me because I don't do it. As for outside, I smoke anyway, laws or not.

What state was this passed in? I think it's a great idea, kids don't have a choice, and should not be exposed to smoke. I am an ex-smoker, but I never smoked around my kids EVER. It's for their health!!

I think it's ridiculous! I don't smoke and I don't like breathing smoke from others, but I see no harm in having a designated area for those who do. If the gov. is so concerned about our health, then why don't they outlaw tobacco products and make them illegal period!!! Maybe we should fine the gov. for allowing the sale of tobacco? After all, didn't they determine that smoking is harmful to your health? It won't be long before they decide what we do in our own homes. The gov. continues to take away our rights and unfortunately, we stand by and do absolutely nothing. We need to wake up before we become Communist America.

I think it's great. I smoke and have 2 kids but would never smoke in their presence or in a car. I completely respect non-smokers. It's my choice to have a bad habit and it should not affect others.
