Anime is the name for animated japanese cartoons or animations that you can watch on TV. Manga is also animation but in comic books, where the characters and conversations are drawn and can be read. :)

Anime = cartoon/ tv shows/ animation (animation sounds like anime)

I think one is animated and one is just drawn (comic books)... hence ANI in anime as in animated?
