Given your age (which I assume you mean to say is 21) any lumps you have are unlikely to be cancer, unless you have a strong family history of breast cancer at a young age. Also, the fact that it comes and goes indicates it is most likely a cyst, which may change with your menstrual cycle. The first thing to do is to go to the doctor when you feel it. She may feel that there is nothing you need to do. However, if she does think it needs investigating, she will probably order an ultrasound. An ultrasound is totally painless - it involves putting a fat, wand shaped instrument on your skin and using sound waves to identify structures underneath you skin - like a lump. Depending on what the ultrasound shows, you may need a biopsy to rule out cancer. Again, I think that's highly unlikely. Still, better safe than sorry - get it checked out.

Things to be concerned about during a self breast exam - any lump that stays or grows, bloody or foul smelling discharge from your nipple, changes in your skin that look like a rash or redness or scaling . . .and again, any lump!

I'm not a doctor, but would guess if it went away and then came back that it is probably not something big to worry about...like cancer. Of course...I said, I am NOT a doctor. I would be leaning towards a cyst or something. Anyway, I would guess you'd have a manual breast exam, and if they find something, would most likely be sent to have a mammogram. This would tell the doctor more. Hope I helped even a small amount, and that all goes well for you!!

The doctor will probably first do a manual exam, if he thinks the situation warrants it, then a mammogram ( which is like a sonogram of your breasts), and if he says something worrisome there may order a biopsy (sometimes done with a syringe or sometimes they hve to cut). But regardless of your age do go to the doctor. They found I have the early stages of cervical cancer at age 14 which EVERY doctor I have talked to says is highly unusual, yet, if I had ignored my symptoms, I would not be alive now...

Though I would not get overly worried at this point I would consult a doctor. There is always a chance of cancer, it does not discriminate by age or race and not even by gender. I would waste no time getting it checked out.

If you are 21 do not be afraid it is something benign see surgeon only for assurance.
