You need to check with the state credentialing agency where you want to obtain your credential, because the standards vary from state to state. For example, when I became credentialed as a special ed teacher in the dark ages, also known as 1975, I lived in Pennsylvania. I took a 4-year program majoring in special ed, which included my student teaching. I graduated with a BS in special education and was awarded a special ed teaching credential. When I moved to West Virginia, they had a reciprocity agreement with PA, and I was automatically given a special ed credential in WV. Then I moved to California, and - even though I had had MANY more units in special ed as an undergrad out of state, and had already taught special ed for several years in PA and WV, I was not eligible for a special ed credential, because CA required a 5th year of studies. So I had to take a year's worth of classes which were redundant, just to get the necessary number of post-grad units. Since that time, CA has changed its procedure several times. So there is no good standard answer to your question. Plan on a minimum of a Bachelors Degree (4 years) and know that you may need an additional one to 2 years post-grad work depending on your state. You will need to do the specific research for the state you want to teach in. In California, it is the Commission on Teacher Credentialing, which does have a website. I am sure each state has an equivalent, but they will no doubt have different names.
But I do want to offer you encouragement and good luck. If you have the heart and the desire to work with students with special needs, you will find it a wonderful and rewarding career (spiritually, at least, if not financially.) I LOVE my students, my job, my assistants, my school.... I consider myself one of the luckiest people I know. I hope you get the same satisifaction!

If no A' Lvels then a one year access course then a degree in education is 3 years. If you have a degree then a one years PGCE. If you have A levels then just the 3 yr degree course in education. So the longest it would take is 4 years. But I beleive it may be dependant on Universities as some offer diff types of courses. You can also do a direct teaching degree, used to be called licenced teaching, where you learn whilst on the job.

you can either study a degree (3 years) in a specific subject, then take a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (1 year), or do a 4 year teaching course. The former is better for secondary schools as you actually have a degree in the subject you are going to teach. The 4 year teaching course tends to be more for primary schools where the study is more general and dont need quite the same level of depth in a prticular subject.

It depends on the rules where you are. In many places to become qualified to teach special education you first need a bachelor's degree (4 years) and then a teaching degree (1 year). In some places you need two teaching degrees - one a general degree and one with a specialty in special education.

I hope this helps. Best of luck with your plans.

As far as I know, it takes two yrs to get your bachelors in gen education. It will take another two to three years to get your masters degree. As you want to work with special needs children,it may take you longer. Why not try going to the N.E.A. website and look for resources on this subject? You could also talk to a student councilor at a local college to get better info.

You will need a bachelor degree in education with an emphasis on special education, all of which will include an internship as part of your program. Go for it. It usually takes four years.

Good luck!!
