Why did they have to keep going back into the Time Tunnel?

Indeed I remember it, I love it back in the seventies ( I know it was aired before, but I was born in 1970 ). I always thought if they could turn back to their own time.
I don't remember exactly why they kept going to the time tunnel, I think it was because they run out of time.

I remember that show from the mid-1960's. I guess they were trying to change the course of history! I was just a very young kid at the time, so I wasn't really able to follow the plot!
