S = Super
SL = Super Light
C = Coupe
K = Kurtz (short) or Kompressor
E = Einspritz
L = Long wheelbase

That "number = displacement" don't apply to all Mercedes nowadays.
180, 200, 230, - these three models all use a 1.8L kompressor engine,
230 - 2.3L kompressor (first generation SLK) this engine gone with the 1st gen. SLK
240 - it was 2.4 litre when introduced, but then bored to 2.6 litre
350 - two versions. SOHC V6 3.7Litre and DOHC V6 3.5Litre (new SLK)
600 - current 600 is a 5.5L V12 bi-turbo
65 - 6.0L bi-turbo

The SL stands for "super lite" or the chassis, why the 380 is the engine size. Thus all E cars have the same chassis but 350 is a 3.5 liter while a 430 would be 4.3. Only time that did not work was in the mid 80 when the 190E was a 2.3 liter car, but almost any other year MB you can tell what it is by that code.
