It never hurts to acknowledge something nice your boss does. It shows that you're appreciative and that's a great quality to have.

But since it's a card and not a gift, you don't have to send another card or a note. I would send a short email basically saying something like, "I appreciate the Birthday card. It was nice of you to think of me. Thank you."

How about: Thank you for remembering my birthday. It was a nice reminder of why I like working for you.

But really, you don't have to even send a card as a thank-for a card. Where does it end? Just tell him verbally.

No need for the thank you card... next time you see him, let him know you got it and thank him in person... but don't go out of your way. If there was a present inside the card a thank you note would be in order.

It isn't really necessary to send a thank you card for getting a card. But if you want to do so, just tell him how you appreciate him remembering your birthday, it's a pleasure working for him etc. etc.

You don't need to send a thank you note for a card. When you see your boss say something like, "Hi, (NAME), I got the birthday card - thanks for thinking of me."

For a birthday card, I'd probably just say thanks for the card, not write a note, but it's not out of line to write if you want to.

Just a verbal 'thank you' would be fine. You can always reciprocate, by giving your boss a birthday card, too.

A card for a card isn't necessary, usually only a gift.
A verbal thank you is totally in order!

Just say thank you for the card but a rise or some money would have been even nicer.
