thomas--well, the reason that Freud's theories (most of them) have been so slammed is obvious from the responses to these questions---people have no idea what he was talking about.
in fact, not only are many many psychiatrists true believers in Freud's theories, but all other forms of therapy grew out of them. Behaviorism was a response to one aspect of Freud's theories that you brought up---they can't be tested. So, there would be no behaviorism without Freud. And then, humanistic psychology was a response to the over-simplicity of stimulus/response behavioral theories. So, Freud and his theories will always be the foundation of theories of psychology.
Even more, there are many aspects of Freud's theories that are not disputed by anyone; our use of defense mechanisms to protect ourselves from anxiety for one thing (in fact, i think that a lot of the people answering this question are demonstrating reaction formation---one of Freud's defense mechanisms--by discounting the relevance of his Oedipal theory because to acknowledge it would cause them anxiety).
there have been attempts, some successful, others not, in recent years to bring Freud's theories into the realm of science.....look for them!
oh, and the fact that your question prompted 21 responses in 9 hours is a pretty good indication that he stuck a chord!!!!

Mostly what Frued was referring to was a stage in mental development that occurs before the age of 6, having an attraction to your mother at 12 would not be included in this theory.

i think u misconstred his theory: What Fureud was saying was that most people date others who have the same personality or traits of there mother, for example there laugh, looks, maybe they spoke in a quiet voice. Whatever, there mom has he was saying u look for those same soothing qualitites that made u feel safe as a child. YOU being 12 marks the start of sexualized thoughts, meaning girls are no longer "icky" and you start noticing there features and are more curious about them. I am guessing u saw you mom naked or in her PJ's and because she is a woman you started to have thoughts about her, not cause she is a mom but because she is a woman. This works the same way in woman with there father's, if u date a girl i promise u will find a similar quaility in you and her father!
SO NO your not a freek you just need to know more before u tell the world! Read up!! and enjoy Sigmund just remember that he was a big cocaine user so some of his ideas are not that rational for that reason!!

You should try informing yourself on a subject before you get all worked up about it. Why not read up on Freud's works and modern psychoanalysis? Psychologists are extremely varied in the theories they subscribe to and the therapies they work with, so 'they' as a collective did not dismiss Freud or conclude anything. Many of his theories are still considered relative today, and form the basis of new approaches. It is not so much a question of 'true or false', but of continued development, of growing, grooming, improving upon ideas than can become outdated as new paradigms and possibilities open up to us. So take a breath and relax. If your goal here is to understand yourself or deal with something you might have some guilt about (unneccessarily, I assure you) then why not read up about this particular theory and see if that helps you. If your intention is to spark debate or comment on the development of psychological theories - don't. You really don;t know enough about it. :-)

Freud's use of sex was not the attraction or sex we think of between a man and a woman. He interpreted dreams as having sexual meanings and made a big thing of the attraction of sons and daughters for father of mother. If you do not take it to mean sex in the usual way, then, it is not so socially unacceptable.

Sigmund Freud is the correct spelling ...
then humm... I don't see why people who have or had attraction to their parent's opposite sex would not be able to say it, ok they wouldn't say it when they are a kid but they wouldn't say they are attracted to a mate either at that age, but later on they can confess that's no problem.
And .. are you sure all Shrinks believe that "frued be proven wrong" ?
May be you should read mythology the Oedipe complex.

I believe that the attraction is based on love, not sex.You know with out a doubt that your mother loves you and will be there for you. This type of love you will never find again, in anyone else except your mother. Its a bond that was created when you spent 9 months in her womb.

I think a lot of what frued said has been proven untrue, How would he explain interracial couples? Maybe it's more of a personality attraction rather than so a physical attraction.
