Boy, am I glad I stumbled on this one. I guess I know something about self harm. No,I am not talking about gross mutilation or drug overdosages but the kind of unneeded exertion that drives you crazy in the end. I had been pursuing the whiff of success for the past couple of years. Got into medical school, had a brilliant academic record and was all set to land up with a good residency. En route,I also lost a number of friends, almost all of my family and never went beyond casual flings for fear of committing too much time.
At 26 now, I repent all that. The past couple of years have been spent in a wild goose chase and the elusion that I am doing this to help myself has actually harmed me at multiple levels. In the end, the wisdom that dawned on me was that you have to draw a line between all your pursuits. Your best hobby might ,otherwise, well turn into slow poison!

well it feels different to different people not only because there are various ways to self harm but also because people go through different emotions and are doing it for different reasons. some people feel a sense of release from their overbearing emotions, some feel in control, some feel 'alive'. but overall it just causes pain - not only physically but mentally too, while self-harming people may think it helps but in the end its just another problem that needs solving. plus it leaves scars which you have to cope with and be questioned on for the rest of your life. there is nothing gained by doing it. instead the root causes of why a person feels they need to do it should be addressed.

I have no personal experience of it, but have know people who have done it. I have heard that it feels like a release, when everything else feels too much. There are differernt ways that people self harm... It is something I have not been able to stop these people doing, and think it takes a lot to help people stop doing it. I guess seeing a psychologist can help, but I feel for anyone who does it, or who knows someone who does it. I wish you the best....In any case, dont blame yourself for it. (If its yourself or someone else.) But realise it is a common thing, but often very hidden. Your or someone else is probably not alone in their feelings....

I have a friend who loves to cut him self, he usually get really high on pain killers and 'amuse' himself by cutting his arm with a really sharp knife. The last time that I knew he did it was about 1 1/2 - 2 years ago and he still has scars on his arm from the cuts. He said that it was an urge that he gets, and that he likes doing it, about the pain after...well I assume he doesn't like that part since the urge is gone and he's left with dealing with the consequences.....BTW I think he lost a girlfriend because of that practice (whom he really loved) and that's what cause him to give it up.

it feels amazing.I hate that I still think that. I hadnt cut in almsot 4 months. I had the urge to SO many times and stopped it, but a couple days ago my whole life felt like it was crashing again. I did it. two nice clean cuts. It felt amazing. I was able to fall asleep right after. It gives me this amazing calmness. All the problems and everything Im doing wrong, they leave. my mind is completley clear, and even though it was just for a moment. I was so calm, it was the best I had felt in a loong time. Im mad at myself for giving in, and now I have these cuts on my arm to hide. but it felt so nice. like a mini vaction away from all these problems

What a bizarre question, i assume you are asking cuz you know someone who does!! no one plans or decides to self harm - it just happens.
If you are sad enough to ask as you are considering it yourself i suggest you go 2 a doc and get some counselling!!

to start with it helps emotionally, but phsyically it looks bad and it kinda hurts. depending on what sort of self harm you do the severity of the pain varies. dont start self harming it can sometimes become addictive and people get the wrong idea of you if they notice.

Yes.
Its feels necessary to some people to cope with things that they could not handle otherwise, its not a good or healthy thing to do but it is not like a suicide attempt, its a coping mechanism.
Its feels like emotional release/relief to people who cannot function otherwise.
