When we get older the things that scared us as children, meaning the boogy man, and the basement, and other child like fears go away. These child like fears could always be taken away, by turning on a light or having a parent check the closet for the monster. But as we age we get real fears like mortgages and taxes and estate planning, and these fears don't go away when you turn on the light or check the closet. So for some of us it's a nice feeling to have a primal fear that goes away when the movie is over, it's very nostalgic. Unfortunately, most modern horror films don't have the power to really get in your head and scare you, but when they are that good it's magic. And, for a moment I forget that I'm raising 4 children and I have to go to work everyday to pay the bills. So that I think is why they produce horror films.

Some people like the thrill that comes with being scared. If the movie has a good plot, and the correct elements( music, lighting, special FX, etc) are all placed in the right order, that movie will make millions beyond the original production cost and possably lead to a lucrative franchise.
ALIEN is a perfect example.

i personally love horror movies. It's kind of fun to see what those idiots can think of next! There are, however, some horror movies that did scare me. I honestly think that horror movies are quite popular to the younger crowd.

Entertainment.
I LOVE horror movies, not the stupid slasher everyone dies type like the Halloween or Jason ones but the ones that make you think it's too real, the kind that get inside your head.
Hitchcock was a master at those type. Classics!

the purpose of producing any movie is to send a message or to make money. since horror movies aren't really sending messages i'm thinking it's for money. with all the teeny-bopper kids going to see them i'm thinking they are making the money they intended to.
