The Dead certainly had a lot of icons didn't they? I agree about the Owlsley/LSD connection. I had a cat named Owlsley but we pronounced it like Oz-lee. Also had a cat Althea (a Grateful Dead song) and my daughter's middle name is also Althea. Her dad was a big deadhead but sadly passed away 6 years ago. In tribute to him she plans on getting a Dancing Teddybear as a tatoo soon. We'll get the design off of one of my t-shirts that has a spiral of different sized dancing bears.

The bears were used on blotter acid produced by Owsley. Owsley's nickname was Bear, the logo is a (registered?) trademark, and it appears in the Bear's Choice cover art. Earlier sightings of the bears suggest that the design may have existed for some time.

Speculation, but: Could be about Owsley 'Bear' Stanley ... he was the Dead's main chemist (LSD) and their sound guy (minus the time he spent in the pen) and he also designed the "Lightning Bolt Skull Logo," ("Steal Your Face" or SYF logo) for the Dead... he's in Australia somewhere now...
As a side note that means nothing to you, Bear and I share the same birthday :)
