It depends on the age of the child or children.

I used to hide pennies in a room and let them keep what they found.

I would take them for walks to find leaves and when we got back home we would make "prints" of them by putting them under freezer paper and lightly coloring over the tops with crayons. Coloring books are good as well as water paints. Encourage creativity!

I would read to them and let them make the sound effects while I recorded it. Then they could play it back and listen whether I was there or not. They really got a kick out of that one.

Make Jell-O squares with them. Or cookies. You could do that after watching Sesame Street or playing with Cookie Monster.

Buy Play Doh and make stuff. You could even buy beads and stuff to put on what you made depending on the age of the kids. Play Doh will also pick up newspaper print. You can cut it with cookie cutters too, decorate them for ornaments and let them dry. Don't forget to make a hole in the top for a string!

Buy sidewalk chalk and draw with them on the sidewalk or driveway.

Play hide and seek, or 1, 2, 3, Red Light.

Show them how to clean their room while making a game of it.

Take them to the museum, zoo, park, beach or restaurant. Make sure you have their parent's permission! Take them on their first bus ride.

Go for a walk. Read them a book about birds and see if when you walk they can identify any.

Look for interesting things. Give each child a brown lunch bag or a plastic sandwich bag and go collect things in the yard or around the block. When you get home have each one take a turn explaining why they picked up that item.

Blow bubbles, jump rope, play jacks.

Teach them the ABCs, math tables, songs, colors, how to tie their shoes, etc...

Make stuff out of consruction paper, tape, glue, glitter, string, feathers, beads, pipe cleaners - what have you? - for any holiday that's coming up. Kids think that's cool too.

Children love attention. A babysitter probably pays longer spans of attention to them then their parents because they can do so. Keep your charges engaged with learning and entertaining and you will always be a sitter in demand!
