If you want to meet startup authors and offer them your proofreading services, then set your rates and GO. Talk to public libraries in your area about Writing groups.
Start with some proof writing experiences.
Oh, and Editor is NOT a Proofreader and vice-versa. Nearly all proofreaders are independent, as major publishers simply do not use them. But many authors, published and self-published, hire a proof-reader, so they can avoid the experience of an editor that points out the silly mistakes.

Send inquiry letters - don't call it proofreading, call it editing. Start small, maybe small local newspapers or classified ad papers. Engineering firms also hire editors and the money is often better. Take lots of computer and English classes. And even though you're an expert, have someone else proofread your letter and resume too. Nothing shoots you down quicker than a typo on a resume for a proofreader job. No what I mean? :)

The love of reading has little to do with professional proofreading. You actually do not absorb the material, you "read" it backward to check the punctuation and syntax, and have to be familiar with the many styles and formats that go along with the material, such as textbook, manuscript, etc., usually following the dictates of the Chicago Manual of Style. You also need a very solid grasp of spelling, grammar and punctuation and when it's appropriate to be lenient with it depending on the material for the times you read the work forward.
