Palm facing the ground hand movement downward as if to say easy ,or slow it down. Most riders will take the advice and will see why around the next turn. Cop, accident. construction or whatever.

Well, I'm just going to add my vote to the knock on your helmet with the fist.

I was at super legal speed and as I rounded a corner I met a guy on a sport bike was beating on his helmet frantically. I figured something was wrong and slowed down, just in time to see a county deputy, hiding in a car wash.

I've been using it myself since then. People seem to understand it.

I've also seen a finger pointed up and rotated around (as if to mean a swirling light). But the palm down is a nice general "caution" that is probably best.

I hold out my left hand in the "slow down" motion, then point my index finger and roll it in a circular motion above my head (like a siren).

I don't know if it works, but I've never seen anyone else give any other signal.

Patting the top of your helmet is the most accepted signal that the police are ahead. The motion is referred to as the "Bubble Gum Machine"

You can also knock on top of your helmet with your left hand a couple times. At least it seems to work with sportbike riders.

I pat my helmet, but I have had sportbikers give me a "thumb down" to tell me to slow for a cop

I use the palm down "slow down" signal.
Patting my helmet doesn't work so well if it's on the coffee table.
