I enjoy life sporadically, however, having shed most of the beliefs I had when I was a child, I wonder.. truly what are we here for? I am leaning towards a hedonistic lifestyle, as I don't want childern or spouses. I want to find something to strive for!

Although opinions vary regarding the meaning of life per SE, I would say, the meaning of your life is what you make of it. Some people believe religion is the meaning of life, so others say is having wife and children, philosophers say its death because since it is unavoidable it makes us accomplish things in ones life. You are what you believe in. Not believing in god would not make you a better person, nor not having children will either. To the eyes of others hedonism looks inappropriate, but what does a deep analisys shows? Will having children fulfill you as a human? Will a marriage and a boring, sedentary lifestyle? Are you fit to be a good parent? Is it really worth all the sacrifice and why? The majority of people ever make a deep thought on these issues. They do things because its the thing to do. Your life has a meaning. Life isn't definable by activities, religion, the things we do in our lives or so. Life is Life by itself. Be yourself. Set your own boundaries for etiquette, be happy.

You have eliminated most of the things that most people find worthwhile. However, lucky for you there are other things that are available for you to strive towards. The number one thing most likely will be your work. Since your time is not taken up by family you have plenty of time to achieve in your chosen profession. Of course there will be no one to really share your success with. You can have plenty of one night stands or longer but these people will not be satisfying in the long run. Another thing you can do is become a benefactor. There are so many worthwhile agencies that work hard everyday to make life better for animals or children. Your local animal shelter can use all of the money and volunteer time it can get. (and saving lives of animals is very worthwhile) There are organizations that work with homeless children. They need money and help. I know personally of one very rich community that has at any one time at least 5,000 children that have no chance of ever going home to parents. They have no where to go and no one to love them. Babies die simply because they are taken care of in three around the clock shifts instead of a mom and dad. It's true. These things may not interest you since you do not have an interest in a family of your own. But still, it is a way to leave a legacy. (and a way to have a family without really having the responsibility)

I suggest you start studying Buddhism or some of the philosophies of the good Roman emperors. As long as you avoid sophism you should acknowledge that others exist. Self interest would say to help others since it is only fortune which determines who is hit with disasters. There is pleasure in helping others. You may also decide that art is inspirational and transcends human lifetimes. Read Carl Sagan's cosmos and marvel with him. Realize that as long as slaves exist on Earth none of us is free. Realize that terrorists are evil and should be stopped. Join the effort. Join the National Guard.

At least you don't have to spend time worrying what God thinks of you anymore. What a waste of time that is.

On that note, use your time productively. If you're wrong about the whole God thing, then at least you'll be able to look back and say, "Well, it was worth it". If you're right, then all you have is your days on this planet. What do you want to do? Do you want to make a difference? Do you just want to seek pleasure? Only you can figure it out. Without God to tell you what to think, you'd better start soon, or you'll waste more time.

To be honest as an atheist it would make sense that you would not believe there is a purpose for your life except to live your life however you choose. If you believe we have a greater purpose that would mean that you believe in a higher existence or God. As a person who believes the Bible to be true I find great purpose in my life and it makes sense to me. I believe that God created me to show His love by making this world that I live in a better place by loving other people and seeking to help people in need. Ultimately my life is about knowing God in such a way that I can understand His plan and love for me as I seek to make a difference in the world we live in.

I also live for the future hope of being able to live in the presence of God when I die. According to the what the Bible teaches the only way for this future hope is by believing in who Jesus Christ is and what the Bible says He has done.

the answer will be different for different perspective you're looking from. A biologist, a philosopher, a theologian, and a politician would probably give very different answers. I'm not a biologist but I would say that life's purpose is to ensure the survival of genetic information to the next generation.

I wish I had a good answer for you. I have been raised Christian but I alse try to be open to other people and their beliefs. I have been chided for my willingness to accept others. I feel that as long as you do not break the laws of man or hurt another person or creature then I can not tell you how to belive or what or what not to believe.

I'm an atheist, what brings me happiness is being alive, enjoying life and the challenges of life. What live for is my relationships with the people I know. A christian co-worker once asked me, "If you're an athiest, what keeps you from doing bad things?" I told him, I don't want to do bad things.

Have you tried doing something for others? try doing one kind act for someone each day. And it's not for some god or anything. You don't need kids or wife to make your life fulfilling, just find something you enjoy doing and work at becoming the best at it.
