Open Source means that the code and software are free to the public. Many Linux flavored OS's used to be this way - and they still are . . . to a point. What they are doing now is selling the current version and when that version becomes outdated by later releases they put that version into the 'open source' bit bucket for anyone to grab. There are others out there which are sufficient - like Knoppix. Just know that if it is open source, you can get the code and tweek it to your hearts content, perhaps with a simple notification to the creator(s) of the OS of what you have done.
