I feel black/white/hispanic is completely wrong and it should be by ethnicity. There is no way to prove races scientifically. Ethnic breakdown would make much more sense. What do you think? Middle Eastern/North African should not be considered Caucasian and Indians aren't the same as Chinese to be labeled simply "Asian."

This is exactly what I said in a recent answer. I am from the UK and cannot for the life of me understand why you qualify Americans by their origin, e.g., African American, Latin American, etc. The sooner the better you call yourselves what you really are the better. If someone is not happy with the term, let them call themselves African, or Italian, or even Irish. To me it stinks of racism in that if someone has to put on a job application African American, it could mean an immediate no appointment and likewise European American. Call yourselves what you all are - Americans - and be proud of it...............

Definitely. I feel uncomfortable marking any of the boxes, because I actually fit in THREE categories. They won't allow me to say I'm a White Hispanic Indian.

I don't think ANYONE should be labeled. We're all pretty much mixed races if we trace it all back. None of us are just one race, Asian, Hispanic, African, American... we're all in a pot that has mixed itself w/just about everything. I'd be surprised and impressed to meet anyone who's got 100% roots, tracing back many generations, and themselves to be 100% of that too.

I know of a brother and sister who were born in South Africa. They're both blue eyed and blonde, citizens of S.A. They do church work here in the states, and will soon become legal citizens of the USA. Will they be African American?
