Albertsons is a leading food and drug store in the US. Due to stiff competition, it's profit has declined over the years.

Larry Johnston came to Albertsons from GE . He made a few significant changes. These include closing stores which are making losses and reviewing supply chain to cut losses. He also brought in Ed Foreman to change the employee mindset. Ed Foreman has a 3 day Successful Life Course which include inspirational handouts , physical and mental exercises. It focuses on changing the attitude of a person.

Johnston believes strongly in Foreman's Progam. "Positive attitude is the single biggest thing that can change a business", says Johnston.

The question is "How is a motivation course for employee good for a business?"

From my experience with dealing with people in the workplace; you can motivate SOME people for 20 minutes; others have so many social problems that unless there is a one-on-one session for motivation, it is futile; I suppose I could add the obvious; these same people (most in their 20's and 30's) bring all their problems to the job and they merely are "going through the motions" while they are there.

Motivation is the engine that drives business!
Business is the engine that drives money!
Therefore motivation in business makes money!

Motivation is a perceived energy. In a group situation it becomes a greater energy. Every perspective customer that steps through a business's doors is receptive to this energy and becomes automatically attuned to this perceptional concept that is comforting. It makes an unheard statement that everything is in order.

The equation is pretty simple. The business standard is; if an employee doesn't like their job then they are not happy; if they are not happy then they are not motivated; if they are not motivated then we are losing business.

All motivational courses and incentive plans are designed for one purpose; to bring all involved to work as a team and create that energy in their work environment. The desired result is that the business makes more money and the employee's get more pay.

I think you should be aware that at the end of these courses there is most often a motivational test of abilities in what has just been taught. This is for upper management to make decisions on which employee's are not going to work out in the new atmosphere trying to be created.

There are many more parts to this in how it helps you as an individual but, I have only written out the main theme in a simple form. I hope that helps you out. Good luck and have a great day!

No one can motivate another person. Read the explanation here: http://bigbadbossbook.blogspot.com/2006/05/motivating-means-manipulating.html

No training, by itself, is good for business. Training is good for business only if it's reinforced continually by your direct reporting manager in the context of your job and if it helps you work more effectively and efficiently.

Motivational training is good for the organization that sells the program--a good revenue stream for a mostly useless product. For employees who attend, it's a nice few days off the job and it might help offer something you can use in your personal life. If it isn't practiced by all management all of the time at work, it isn't going to make a difference.

I think you already knew that, right? Most employees do; most managers don't.

Think about it a bit. If an employee is motivated to do their best job, won't the business reap the benefits of that, as well as the person's family ?
