Only use Aspen bedding. Others can be dangerous. Try to get larger cut bedding. Small can get in their eyes and cause infection.
Dont have more than one. They WILL kill and eat eachother.
Breeding is usually not suggested.
Also , you cannot tell if a hamster is female or male until a while after they are born. I found out the hard way =/

Hi. My sister bought herself a hamster a while agon and i have been reading about them. You should feed a hamster the food you can get at the petstore, and also you can give him some kinds of vegetables and fruit. There are many lists you can find about what kinds you can and cannot give them. We usually give him pieces of apple, or cucumber, or a grape. I dont know much about the breeding and the babies swince she has a male hamster, and no female. For bedding it is best to use the kids of woodchip/sawdust stuff you also use for rabbit houses. You can ask wich one is best at the local pet shop. Be careful though because there are also kinds that are perfumed, hamsters usually dont like the smell.
She made a huge mistake when she bought the cage as well. She had a 100%plastic cage, and unfortunaletly that is not the right kind of cage for most hamsters. They chew their way out! Now she has one with the iron bars, that go all the way down to the bottom of the plastic lower part. Makes sure that you have a gace with bars that are very close to eichother because hamsters can get through very small holes!
If you want to give the hamster a treat, make sure you buy the kind of hamster treat with no (or little) sugar in it. Sugar is not too good for them.
When you get them a running wheel, make sure there's no bars in them. You should get the plastic closed kinds, because if there is any opening in it the hamster can get injured by getting its little feet stuck while running.

i will answer as if u r speaking of a syrian since u didnt specify. 1st thing is definitely one hamster per cage. they are terriotorial loners. they love fruit and can have it daily (no citrus) in small portions - apple, banana, cantaloupe, grapes, etc. just dont give them too much wet fruit/veggies a day. no iceberg lettuce! too watery. hide his dry food in a couple places instead of all in a bowl. he'll like the hunt. chew sticks for sure - mine prefers greenies dog biscuits over the wooden ones.
NO PINE OR CEDAR BEDDING - the oils can cause a rash or breathing probs & yes can lead to death. carefresh, aspen, and/or corncob bedding only. give them some plain toliet paper sheets---i use scott brand---so they can shred it for bedding. stress often kills them, constantly waking them, not having a big enough cage. the cages they make are too small. u can buy 2 & connect them. if he's chewing obsessively his cage is too small & hes bored. u can buy a hamster ball if u cant get a bigger cage & let him run daily until he stops running. keep tape on the lid because they pop open. make sure his cage has a wheel-not the wire kind because he can hurt his feet.
keep the pee corner cleaned more than the rest of the cage. just scoop & replace. when u do a full cleaning no bleach! vinegar & baking soda & rinse WELL. also leave some of the old bedding from his sleep area when u clean. if theres no feces there leave the whole bed area alone.
they can catch colds so keep him away from windows, drafts, AC, etc. and they can catch our illnesses so stay away when u r sick. dont wake him in the day, this stresses them.
i would not recommend breeding. it's difficult & there are far too many hamsters who need homes already. since they are 1 per cage u cant just keep them all.

All you need is:
-Commercial hamster food
-A 10 gallon aquarium
-bedding(you can use cedar as long as there are no babies)
-get a hamster wheel or ball for exercise
-water bottle
-a tunnel(paper towel roll is fine)
If you are going to breed them you need to make sure you have homes for ALL of the babies before you hamster is pregnant.
You will not have to do anything to take care of the babies as long as the mother is doing her job. If you notice her rejecting the babies, it is for a reason. She knows if something is wrong with one of her babies. Hamsters are cannibalistic and will eat the babies if something is wrong with them or if she feels that there isn't enough food or water for them ALL to survive. As soon as you breed them. separate the male and femal. The male will kill the babies. So you will have to get two 10 gallon aquariums.
You will be able to handle the babies after about 3 days. Depending on how much the mother trusts you.

I had hamster growing up. It started out with just one, Charlie. But then my Mom felt bad for Charlie -- she thought Charlie would be lonely. Then we got Charlie a room mate, Harvery.
Well as it turned out Charlie should've been named Charlene and they had 12 babies.
So don't put 2 hamster together. Because first of all, they fought all the time and had to be seperated.
A pet store should be able to tell you what kind of bedding & food to get. Although I do remember that they're not supposed to be given meat.

i've got had around 4-5 diverse hamsters. i got here across that the two boys fought an undesirable lot, which led to a single of them killing the different. men are greater sociable than women folk. so some distance as weight loss plan is going; I used to feed mine ordinary hamster food, with clean fruit and water each and daily. it rather is terrific for them to have some variety of igloo for a mattress to 'hide away' from each and every thing. They like to be in those balls and roll around all around the floor. in the event that they have toys to play with, they could be rather chuffed. One concern in spite of the undeniable fact that, you may desire to purchase blocks to maintain the dimensions of their the teeth down, in the event that they advance too long, it would desire to reason dental issues for them. desire this helped.

A hamster is a rodent belonging to subfamily Cricetinae. The subfamily contains about 18 species, classified in six or seven genera. Most have expandable cheek pouches, which reach from their cheeks to their shoulders. Because they are easy to keep and breed in captivity, hamsters are often used as lab animals and pets.
Species of hamsters
The best known species of hamster is the Syrian Hamster, also known as the Golden Hamster, Mesocricetus auratus, which is commonly kept as a pet. It is also sometimes mistakenly called a "Fancy" hamster or "Teddy Bear" hamster. Pet stores also have taken to calling them "Honey Bears," "Panda bears," "Black bears," "European Black bears," and "Dalmatian," depending on their coloration, although these are not correct names.
The other kinds of pet hamsters are all different varieties of dwarf hamster. This name applies to four distinct kinds of hamster. Campbell's Hamsters (Phodopus campbelli) is the most common kind of dwarf. They are also sometimes called 'Russian Dwarfs,' and although they originate in Russia, this does not identify them exclusively, as almost all hamsters originate in Russia.
Winter White Hamsters (Phodopus sungorus) are also fairly popular. They are called Winter Whites because their coats turn white when the hours of daylight decrease.
The Chinese Hamster Cricetulus curtatus is another kind of dwarf. They are unique among hamsters because they have prehensile tails about four centimeters long. The other species have very short tails that are not prehensile.
Roborovski Hamster (Phodopus roborovskii) is the last species of dwarf. Extremely small and fast, they do not make good pets for those wanting hamsters to cuddle.
