When things are cancelled because they may cause offence isn't this disturbing? Will we one day lose Christmas and the word blackbird due to the offence they cause? Surely we have the right to love or hate who we want providing we dont fight or kill anyone as this is freedom.

Good question Shane, I do believe that political correctness has been carried to extremes in the Uk in so many ways and it is now stifling peoples rights and sometimes makes a laughing stock of the folk that bring out new rules to so called protect kids from killing each other with conkers etc. or the banning of gollywogs in case some black person takes offence, as you say one day we will lose Christmas because it is offensive to Muslims or Sikhs.

Being politically correct is the absurd belief that we are respecting the sensiblities of others. Respect is something that is earned not given irrespective.
However, that does not give anyone the right to poke fun at others simply because they are different from that person. Neither should we put everyone into the same basket. Calling muslims "wogs" or "towelheads" is wrong in the same way as calling the English "stiff-arsed" or "hooligans".
We all need limits, or boundaries to our freedom. Freedom without limits is anarchy. If my freedom impinges the freedom of somebody else, then my freedom needs to be limited so it does not, and vice-versa.
A few years ago, chicken meat was known as breast and thigh. Now it is known as white and dark meat. That was to stop people from getting sexually excited whenever they were offered a bit of thigh. The same has happened to ****. Now we have to use the word rooster. Sometimes a farm only has poultry running around.

I wish I knew what your example of something canceled is. If it was something related to religion that was sponsored by the government, then it should have been canceled because religion has no place in government and vice versa. That is what churches are for. Along those lines, we will not "lose" the Christian Christmas. The government will simply not support it in anyway. However, since there is a mainstream celebration of a secular Christmas, that is fine for government to dabble in like Thanksgiving or July 4th or even the secular celebration of Halloween.

You have to remember the reason for PC is to be considerate of those who do not follow your beliefs or the mainstream. I would think most people would want to be nice and try to include everyone in greetings and whatnot. However, you will always retain the choice to show your lack of desire to be considerate of others by using a term that is not PC. In a work or public institutional setting, however, you do not retain the same "freedom of speech" and can expect to have to follow the rules of the institution.

YES!!

But be careful, Political Correctness KNOWS NO POLITICAL PARTY OR RELIGIOUS DENOMINATION. The Christians are worried about losing their religious holidays and religious freedoms--so is everyone else!
When will they make me take off my pentacle because it is offensive to some?

Furthermore, the Right worries about losing TV programs like All in the Family and some old Bug's Bunny episodes that made fun of WW2, but the Left worries about their freedom of speech and right to congregate.

We all need to stop this bickering and learn tolerance.

Oh Yes. And long may it continue. It has a disproportionate effect on the worst characters with the worst attitudes in society. Reasonable, considerate people are hardly effected at all. You think your overstating for rhetorical value by mentioning Christmas but I look forward to the day when lying blatantly to children about mythical characters deciding their worth is no longer acceptable in modern society. Not at Christmas or at any time of year.

Freedom to do what?
PC is a powerful tool but I agree with you that this tool is a double edged sword. The more you apply PC, then the less freedom you have but there may be causes that you are protecting.
So yes for some people and no for others.

PC drives me crazy! I'm a wheelchair user born with a disability and it aint a prob to me. People think they have to watch what they say around me for fear of causing offence. Or worse, they resent me cos they think I have a cushy life. Actually, I see myself as a person, not a disabled person. I do normal things, I just have to do 'em sitting in a chair!!! Why is it necessary to be PC? I laugh at my **** ups, why cant everyone????

You have the right to love and hate who you want. Why would you want the government to be involved in it? Having the government mandate holidays, beliefs, relationships seems like a very bad idea.
