A bit ludicrous as that was what people did at the time being igornat of the effects of smoking. There are more than enough anti-smoking campaigns out there to discourage people to stop smoking. I have never watched an episode of Tom and Jerry with Tom or Jerry smoking and thought, "Mmm, that looks good, I think I'll go and find a factory flue to suck on. Honestly, I can understand why it's being done, but there's sensible and then there's downright silly!

In the 1940's smoking was actually considered glamourous and acceptable. In fact, if people didn't smoke back then, it was considered uncool. Radio and television programs were often sponsored by tobacco companies. In those days, if a tobacco company sponsored your show, you had it made.

If Tom & Jerry were to be edited for today's standards, the cartoon might not make any sense. Our children need to be told that in a different time and era, it was considered OK to do certain things but now it's not OK.

If we tell our kids that, they will understand about the time in which movies and cartoons were made. But again should be explained that now it's not OK for anyone to imitate what is seen on TV. You can laugh at it, but don't follow it as an example.

I personally don't agree with it. It was a big part of the culture back then. They weren't aware of all the health problems smoking could cause back then.

I'm guessing it's the same people who have tried editing all the Looney Tunes for racial slurs. It was part of the culture of the 1940s-60s. Can't we all just laugh it off? Case in point, I am from a very rural area and could be considered a redneck or hillbilly. I laugh at the Bugs Bunny cartoons that poke fun at the stereotypes of hillbillies. These cartoons were made for entertainment, especially to give people a break from the harsh reality of life (especially during WWII). True, I may not understand all the wartime references and terminology, but that is just part of the history of American pop-culture.

Everyone is trying to take the fun out of everything. I don't ever remember wanting to be Tom or Jerry! They are cartoon characters!! If parents would talk to their children and teach them what's real and what's not real this would not be a problem. We all know that animals don't smoke so we know that it is not real.

I think its a bit daft. I grew up watching them and don't remember ever watching them and thinking "gosh, that looks cool. I want to do that."

I wouldn't hit someone over the head with a frying pan because I saw it in a cartoon, so why that?
