I'm not sure what course your doing, but usually it wont be that many lectures/tutorials a week - GO TO THEM ALL!!! everything they tell you in these lessons will come up in the exam, if you don't do any other reading outside your lessons you know enough to pass (especially the first year, its usually only 40% needed)

Make sure you make an effort to make yourself known to your lecturers, they will be marking the majority of your work and if they can put a Face to a piece of work and like you they will not be so harsh in their marking.

Join NUS it gets you loads of money off for whatever you need - buy your course books off the Internet or Blackwell's (who do student discount). Get a Nat-west Student account (you get a 5 year young persons rail card and £1000 free overdraft)

I would disagree with the person above who said only go out at weekend...All the student deals in pubs/Clubs happen in the week, so you should go out in the week when you don't have lectures on the morning....which leads onto your schedule...when you get to uni they will tell you, you cant change your classes around, however if there is another class teaching the same module and you kick up enough of a fuss (say your double booked with your job or something) then they let you change, I changed Four 9am lectures my first year for all afternoon ones, it helps loads.

If you live in halls be nice to the security guards/receptionists, you never know when you will need their help and if you have been an *** they wont help you out.

Find out who the slackers/hard workers are in your tutorials - try and avoid the slackers, they may be a laugh to go drinking with but you will end up doing the work if you get put in a group with them!

Try and take a work experience gap year (usually in your 3rd year) - Its well worth it, on average you will start on £4k more than a normally graduate and your much more employable than someone with no experience - the work experience team in your uni will be able to help you sort out a job, even if its only a summer one

Only other thing I would say is, if you crap at budgeting then invest in a PS2 or something when you have money at the start of the year, because by Christmas you will be skint and have no money to go out, so its a life saving when having to stay in!

If you added where you were going then I'm sure you would get some good information on the area too, but can't help you without that info :)

Other than that make the most of it:
1st Year is 90% Fun 10% Work
2nd Year is 70% Fun 30% Work
3rd Year is 10% Fun 90% Work
So make the most of the first 2 years, if you want to end the course with a degree at the end!

Do everything possible in fresher's week to meet loads of people.
Socialise lots.
Get a seriously good bank account, and make friends with your personal advisor - you'll need them.
Top tip: On the day reading lists are posted go in really early, steal the list from the board and go get the books before anyone else. :)
Oh, and have fun, it's costing you loads so you may as well enjoy it.

I am in my fourth year of University and the best tip that I can provide is to stay focused on your school work. It is really easy to get side tracked by friends, work and other activities but where University is only a short period of your life, and one of the most important aspects of your life, you might as well devote as much time as you can to it. Another tip is to connect with your professors and become known by your classmates.

Register with clubs that do activities you like.

Take part in all the activities during Freshers week...its the best way to make friends quickly.

Study hard, but make sure you balance work and fun. Too much of either isnt good for you.

Just be yourself, relax and enjoy yourself.

Socialise as much as you can, study hard and love your subject, don't drink too much it will make you ill, don't feel pressured to take anything illegal if you don't want to.

Get a job and save your student loan in a savings account so you can afford to do your MA or Msc after you undergraduate degree. Then you wil get a better job.

Good luck!

I lived in halls and took with me a bottle of vodka and a toasted cheese sandwich maker. One the first night I invited all the people from my corridor to my room to have a drink before we went out and after the bar closed back to mine for cheese toasties. It worked and I made loads of friends.

The toastie was frankly one of the most invaluable things I took with me. Post pub everyone wanted to be in my room munching on sarnies!!
